Introduction to Dinghy Sailing

If you’re new to dinghy sailing a range of courses are available to help you to learn and progress within the sport. All courses are part of the RYA National Sailing Scheme, which offers two options depending on how far you want to progress.

Option One is the RYA Level 1 (Start Sailing) course which offers you a practical introduction that covers in the minimum knowledge required to get afloat under supervision. If you enjoy the level 1 course and want to continue, this course leads perfectly into the range of level 2 courses available.

Option Two is to go straight onto RYA Level 2 (Basic Skills), either as a 12 week evening course or over two purpose-linked weekends. Starting from scratch, this course covers the combined level 1 and 2 syllabus to teach you the foundations of the sport. Its aim is to make you a competent sailor in light winds.

Completion of level 2 is the basis from which you develop your sailing through practice and further courses- some of which are listed in our ‘Improvers’ section.
